Spread the word

I’m a huge fan of independent films, much more so than the big blockbusters that Hollywood churns out year after year. I mean, I love comic-based films just as anyone, but do you think there’s any chance the studios could, like, take a year off or something? They’re going to end up really scraping the barrel soon; maybe we’ll see movie versions of some of the stories you used to get in the “Photo Love” comics in the 1970s!

That’s why independents are so much better. They can’t afford to pay for the rights to the big books or comics or autobiographies. So, they ever have to show more imagination or make adaptations of little-known books or comics or autobiographies, opening them up to an entirely new audience. Sometimes, you get one of these so-called little films that just takes off and soars. Whether through word of mouth, good reviews, internet campaigns, email marketing software or just a lot of hard work, the positive noise about these movies starts to build. And before you know it the director is stood on stage at the Oscars with a look of complete disbelief on his face.

At least that’s what happened with Danny Boyle and ’Slumdog Millionaire'the cd of which I still have in the storage unit. There’s just no way that film should have become the phenomenon it did, and I doubt that Danny or anyone involved with the movie ever expected to end up in LA on Oscars night. Yet it was thoroughly deserved. As a piece of cinematic story telling it was as near to perfection as I’ve ever seen in many years of watching movies. So the next time you see a good independent film, spread the word. You never know; the next time you see them might be on stage at the Kodak Theatre!
